Screaming Mermaid (Ferris Wheel) is part of an ongoing series called “Sad Broken Toys” that Maria Fox Larsson has been working on since February 24th, 2022. This series explores toy/playground techniques and aesthetics as a medium for expressing frustration and pain in a way that can bring emotional support and relief to the people around us.
Screaming Mermaid is a virtual reality rideable ferris wheel. Its pods house screams recorded by Maria’s and Ernest’s friends who have kindly lent their voices, expressing both their individual pains and frustrations and the pain and frustration we all currently feel.
Screaming Mermaid can be viewed as part of the Quantum Critic 2023 VR exhibition in Spatial (both with VR headset, and in browser).
