I am slowly putting in order my thermal prints bef I am slowly putting in order my thermal prints before our @hyper_borealis exhibition - and reprinting the pics from the past three weeks - in order of taking, on continuos strips (the rolls are stated to be around 8 metres, but I think they're a bit shorter).

This part is mostly from Kirkenes and my trip there from Jakobstad (via Seinäjoki, Rovaniemi, Ivalo, Näätämö and Neiden).

It feels really special, seeing them all rolled out like that. And I've discovered some hacks for more saturated printing along the way. 🙃💛

I think part of what draws me to thermal print pho I think part of what draws me to thermal print photography is the thermal print paper itself - the compact rolls of paper pre-treated with heat-sensitive chemicals making the paper turn dark when heat is applied. The very same stuff that is used for printing receipts. A material that is associated with the routine, the mundane. A material that is used for on the spot documentation of everyday financial transactions.

These rolls have fascinated me since I was a kid, I remember sometime around the beginning of middle school regularly going to a small office supply store near the school, in an old brown wooden house, with beige worn out linoleum floors. Sometimes I would just slowly look through the tall glass cases of pens, notebooks, copy paper, hole punches, staplers, preprinted forms, rubber bands, paperclips and the like. Some days I'd that myself to something special (I've always had a weakness for pens - and other mark-making and mark-making adjacent tools). One of those special items were rolls of thermal print paper.

I didn't know at the time what the printing mechanism was, I was just fascinated by the long strips of paper wound into tight rolls. They were also convenient for writing notes to friends during class. Or so I thought. They came in various widths and lengths, and I would always spend a long time choosing the perfect one, and then go home tightly clutching it to my chest feeling happy with all its endless rolled up potential right there, in my hands. The miracle cost about 3 rubles, slightly more than a chocolate ice-cream in a waffle cup - or a pack of instant noodles at the market by the conservatory that I'd often buy on my way to music school.

About a month ago @lopardinanadya introduced me to thermal print cameras. They're made as a toy for kids, so they can make pictures and get instant prints cheap. The cost of a roll is still comparable with a basic ice-cream or a pack of ramen. And the pictures printed are softly grainy in a very particular way - and wonderfully black and white.

I keep hoping to make an animation with the assort I keep hoping to make an animation with the assortment of crab bits I've found (several almost intact shells - and a number of legs/claws in varying sizes and degrees of intactness), but the winds here have a mind of their own, and so far have not been crab shell stop motion friendly. Today's come in gusts of up to 20 metres per second.

Guess we'll see if I catch a day of relative stillness for that. Thinking of puffy-cheeked cloud-faced wind characters from medieval maps. Though I have a feeling the wind impersonating figure here would look different, nothing cherub-like. More like the weathered face of an old, old fisherman, maybe?

The old rusty mooring buoys washed up on the shore The old rusty mooring buoys washed up on the shore are a special and passionate love of mine here at Kjølnes. Now I have finally found one that was not frozen into the snow - and not in an especially rocky area, so this one is coming home with me (residency home, not Jakobstad home, unfortunately. If all goes well, the buoy will be the superstar of a sound installation I'm working on.

So far, I've managed to roll this beauty about halfway home. hopefully, tomorrow I'll manage the other half.

Working out the whole thermal print to digital neg Working out the whole thermal print to digital negative to cyanotype process. Printed the first digital negatives on Thursday after some dancing with and around the printer - and made some test cyanotype prints. Slowly moving from the past weeks' experiments to translating it all into the final works for the @hyper_borealis exhibition - though there's still a bit of experimenting to be done to get the prints just the way I want them.

Loving the cyanotype blues. 💙💙🤍

The dogster is not with me at the residency, but I had a pic that I took the night before leaving Jakobstad, and I thought he should be my first print - now he's keeping me company.

I am all of a sudden taking part in ovde nije tamo I am all of a sudden taking part in ovde nije tamo in Belgrade with my thermal print animations - all while being very much present here in Berlevåg, at Kjølnes lighthouse, about 4000 km away. From the preview glimpses I've seen, the exhibition is turning out great, check it out if you're in the area 💛

ovde nije tamo
Interdisciplinary exhibition
17/04-05/05
Opening on April 17 at 7:00 PM

The first exhibition organized by the “drugo mesto” collective will include works by 16+ artists at “Sreda Obitaniya” UI.Safarikova 6. Mediums include paintings, photography, objects, installation, zines, and more

The distancing from "ovde " and "tamo" makes "nije" a negotiation space, intersecting changing self-definitions, languages and bodies. The art works explore the dynamics between belonging and othering from a locality in general and specifically the one we find ourselves in.
"drugo mesto" - a collective of artists living and working in Belgrade. drugo mesto was created as a self-organization and non-hierarchical project where goals, the necessity of working here and now, and the relevance of art in general are discussed through cooperation and communication.

Exhibition opening on 17.04
From 7:00 PM happening by nadia chernova and co-authors "please disregard"
8:00 PM performance by Kota Davudova
8:30 PM performance "painkillers city" by Sharly Kornitskaya
9:00 PM DJ set by director yader

I love those walks. And I feel like a bit of a sci-fi character or a post apocalyptic scavenger, slowly walking the shore picking out what's left of civilization, trudging home with my bags full of questionable gifts that feel like treasures and that I hope to put to good use. I'm good at finding things.

Luckily, I do have a warm home to come back to. And civilization still kind of more or less stands. Kind of.

Thermal print sea animation from around Kjølnes l Thermal print sea animation from around Kjølnes lighthouse.

I've been experimenting with thermal print animation for a few weeks now, and waves have proved to be somewhat more challenging to capture than I originally thought. Catching the waves at all the right phases without moving the camera (my camera doesn't have a remote release button, so even with a tripod it's easy to move it a bit by accident) - and without freezing your hands off in the icy arctic wind. And getting the length of the cycle just right - because the wave sequences, while similar, are, of course, not at all identical.

This is one of my earlier wave experiments and a part of my @hyper_borealis Kjølnes fyr series, and I'm still working on capturing the waves just the way I want them.

Using the gift of my residency time to play and ex Using the gift of my residency time to play and experiment.

I've been obsessed with broken glass/mirrors, and shards and shattering in general for quite a while now (some of that showed in the Suspended exhibition). Took the morning today to experiment with cyanotyping the broken windows of a structure I call the Tower of Love and Anarchy. This will hopefully grow into a series of prints of the glass itself, but also is hopefully soon to become a site-specific under (or over) layer for prints from my thermal print series.

Really love the way the cracks show up in the print. Looking forward to layering that with thermal-print based digital negatives. 💙

I still feel a bit insecure sharing parts of my art that are not sculpture/graphic, and are generally more process based. But they are an important part of where I am and where I'm going as an artist now. So here they are, and its quite likely that I'll be sharing more. And that for a while my Instagram will be a bit of a mess reflecting the messy process of figuring out where and why I'm going and all that comes with it.

Thanks again to @hyper_borealis and @culturemoveseurope

I think I'll share my happy face here, because I h I think I'll share my happy face here, because I haven't had one to share in a very long time.

For the past few days I have been wandering the shores around Kjølnes lighthouse for hours, listening to the waves, drinking in the wind-formed patterns of the snow and rocks, talking and singing out loud to myself, making up songs about whatever's around, repeating words and sounds just because they sound, feel and taste right. When I walk alone by the sea, I feel like the actual unabridged me, the one I never really show to anyone. I feel calm and in touch with myself. And able to play and create.

The sea is magical. I see it in my window when I wake up and from my desk when I work. I'm slowly experimenting with thermal print animation and taking time to think and to be.

I am so grateful for the miracle of being here.

Great big thanks to @hyper_borealis and @culturemoveseurope for making this possible.
